faq:
  - question: Can SPEI receive stablecoins directly?
answer: No. SPEI carries domestic peso payments between participating financial institutions. A provider must handle any stablecoin receipt and currency conversion before submitting a peso payout.
  - question: Does a completed blockchain transfer prove a Mexican supplier has been paid?
answer: No. The conversion and local payout may still be pending. Confirm that the beneficiary received the agreed pesos, and reconcile the provider records with the payment's SPEI reference and available CEP receipt.
  - question: Does Tempo Routes provide an end-to-end USD-to-MXN bank payout?
answer: A supported Tempo Routes connection establishes the supported stablecoin leg. Delivery of pesos to a bank account requires a compatible conversion and payout provider with applicable access and terms. Confirm each part of the proposed flow separately.

# US-to-Mexico business payments: how stablecoins connect to SPEI

_Paying a Mexican supplier from a US dollar balance involves funding, currency conversion, and delivery to a local bank account. Stablecoins can connect parts of that flow, while SPEI completes the domestic peso transfer. [Talk to Tempo about the settlement requirements for your payment flow](/contact/)._

A supplier that invoices in Mexican pesos needs the agreed amount in its bank account, matched to the right invoice. A fast blockchain transfer completes only part of that job. The payment also needs an executable exchange rate, a provider that can deliver pesos, and confirmation that the beneficiary received them.

For finance and payments teams, the useful way to evaluate the US-to-Mexico corridor is to follow the money from the original dollar balance to the final peso credit. For the wider regional picture, see [cross-border payments in Latin America](/learn/cross-border-payments-latin-america/).

## The four steps in a dollar-to-peso payment

A stablecoin-funded supplier payment can follow this sequence:

|Step|What happens|What the business needs to confirm|
|-|-|-|
|Funding|US dollars fund a provider account or purchase a dollar stablecoin.|Accepted funding method, account eligibility, and when funds become available.|
|Onchain transfer|The stablecoin moves to the receiving provider on a supported network.|Exact token and network, deposit address, fees, and confirmation requirements.|
|FX conversion|The provider converts the dollar-denominated balance into pesos.|Executable exchange rate, quote expiry, fees, and the amount available for payout.|
|Local payout|A provider submits a peso transfer through SPEI to the supplier's account.|Beneficiary details, payment reference, payout status, and confirmation of receipt.|

The arrangement can vary. A provider might handle several steps through one integration, or a business might use separate funding, conversion, and payout services. Bitso Business describes a flow in which businesses fund with a dollar stablecoin, confirm conversion to MXN, and pay the beneficiary through SPEI. That illustrates the architecture without establishing availability for every business, token, or network. [Bitso Business](https://business.bitso.com/en/blog/cross-border-payments-latin-america)

## SPEI delivers the domestic peso payment

SPEI is Banco de México's electronic payment system for transfers between accounts at participating financial institutions within Mexico. It moves pesos on the domestic leg. It does not perform the dollar-to-peso conversion or receive a blockchain transfer directly. Banco de México describes SPEI as operating on a 24/7 basis. [Banco de México](https://www.banxico.org.mx/servicios/spei_-informacion-banco-mex.html)

The payout provider supplies the connection between the stablecoin balance, the FX conversion, and the local transfer. This means a business should evaluate that provider's actual service hours, liquidity, limits, and eligibility alongside the payment rail's availability.

For beneficiary setup, the CLABE is the 18-digit account identifier commonly used for bank transfers. A provider can require additional information. Juno's documentation, for example, requires a registered destination account and recipient legal name for its MXNB-to-MXN redemption flow. It also specifies account-level withdrawal limits. Those requirements belong to that provider and product, rather than to every stablecoin payment. ## Compare the pesos received against the dollars paid

A low network fee says little about the complete cost of a supplier payment. Compare quotes for the same invoice amount, funding method, and delivery deadline. Include the funding charge, exchange-rate spread, conversion fee, blockchain or bridge fees, and local payout charge wherever they apply.

Keep the FX spread separate from explicit fees. A provider may build its margin into the exchange rate, charge a separate conversion fee, or combine both. Counting a quoted spread twice would overstate the cost.

For an invoice denominated in pesos, the practical comparison is the total dollars required to deliver the exact amount owed. Record when the quote was obtained and how long it remains executable. A headline rate that expires before funding arrives is not the rate the business ultimately pays. Our [stablecoin transfer fees guide](/learn/stablecoin-transfer-fees/) shows how to compare net recipient amounts without counting fees twice.

## Measure delivery through to the bank account

Track separate timestamps for funding availability, stablecoin receipt, FX execution, payout submission, and beneficiary credit. This exposes where a payment waits and gives finance teams a meaningful delivery measure.

Banco de México distinguishes a payment settled in SPEI from confirmation that the receiving institution has credited the beneficiary. Its Comprobante Electrónico de Pago, or CEP, records that credit using information supplied by the receiving institution. This makes the CEP useful for resolving a supplier's question about receipt. [Banco de México](https://www.banxico.org.mx/servicios/mi-spei_-transferencias-ban.html)

Reconciliation should connect the invoice to the provider's payment identifier, any blockchain transaction hash, the conversion record, and the SPEI tracking reference. Juno's financial-movements documentation shows why these records differ: funding, conversion, and withdrawal have distinct states and identifiers. ## Start with one supplier workflow

A useful pilot uses a small set of recurring supplier payments with known invoice amounts and an existing cost baseline. Compare total dollars paid, pesos credited, end-to-end delivery time, and the effort required to resolve exceptions. Test what happens when a quote expires, beneficiary details are invalid, or a payout is returned.

Tempo provides near-instant onchain settlement with sub-cent fees for the stablecoin leg. The complete Mexico flow still depends on compatible funding, FX, and peso-payout services, so confirm SPEI delivery with the payout provider.

[Explore Tempo Routes](/routes/) and confirm the supported connections for the onchain portion of your proposed flow. Then evaluate the local payout leg against the supplier's actual requirements.

## FAQ

**Can SPEI receive stablecoins directly?**

No. SPEI carries domestic peso payments between participating financial institutions. A provider must handle any stablecoin receipt and currency conversion before submitting a peso payout.

**Does a completed blockchain transfer prove a Mexican supplier has been paid?**

No. The conversion and local payout may still be pending. Confirm that the beneficiary received the agreed pesos, and reconcile the provider records with the payment's SPEI reference and available CEP receipt.

**Does Tempo Routes provide an end-to-end USD-to-MXN bank payout?**

A supported Tempo Routes connection establishes the supported stablecoin leg. Delivery of pesos to a bank account requires a compatible conversion and payout provider with applicable access and terms. Confirm each part of the proposed flow separately.
