Unsecured credit is borrowing without collateral. Lenders decide based on the borrower's ability to repay, using credit history, cash flow and, increasingly, alternative data. This guide covers the main types, how lenders decide and how stablecoins can carry the money. For business borrowing, see unsecured business loans.

Credit cards, personal loans and many small business loans are unsecured. No car, building or cash deposit stands behind them. If the borrower does not repay, the lender relies on the loan agreement, collections and, in some cases, a court judgment.

How lenders decide

Because there is no asset to fall back on, the credit decision rests on the borrower. Lenders look at repayment history, income or revenue, existing debt and how cash moves through the business or account. Pricing reflects that risk, so unsecured credit often costs more than a comparable secured loan.

Many people and small businesses have little formal credit history. The World Bank's Global Findex tracks how many adults borrow and from whom, and shows how much borrowing still happens through family, friends and informal lenders. Lenders reaching these borrowers increasingly use alternative data, such as mobile money or wallet activity, to assess repayment ability.

Tala takes this approach. Its partnership with the El Dorado wallet will offer unsecured credit to eligible wallet customers in Bolivia, with Tala handling underwriting, providing the capital and taking the credit risk.

Disbursement and repayment in stablecoins

Once a loan is approved, the money still has to reach the borrower and come back. Some lenders now send loans in stablecoins to the borrower's wallet and collect repayments the same way. For a borrower, that means receiving and repaying a loan inside a wallet they already use, at any hour. For the lender, each disbursement and repayment leaves a record that can be matched to the loan.

Stablecoin settlement covers the onchain transfer only. Licensing, disclosures, underwriting and collections remain the lender's responsibility, and any conversion to local currency depends on the wallet's providers.

What to evaluate

Borrowers comparing unsecured credit should look at the full cost, including fees, the repayment schedule and what happens after a missed payment. Businesses should check for personal guarantees and general liens. Platforms adding credit to their product should confirm who lends, who services the loans and who holds the license in each market.

FAQ

What is unsecured credit?

Unsecured credit is borrowing that is not backed by a specific asset the lender can claim. The lender decides based on the borrower's ability and willingness to repay, and relies on the loan agreement if the borrower does not pay.

What is the difference between secured and unsecured credit?

Secured credit is backed by collateral, such as a car, property, cash or receivables, which the lender can claim after a default. Unsecured credit has no specific collateral, so lenders usually rely more on credit history and cash flow and may charge more to cover the added risk.

Do unsecured business loans need a personal guarantee?

Often, yes. Many lenders ask owners of smaller businesses to guarantee the loan personally, and some take a general lien on business assets even when no specific collateral is pledged. Read the agreement to see what the lender can claim.
